Con Edison launches smart grid pilot in Queens

[img:Con%20edison%20Logo.thumbnail.jpg| ]New York, NY, U.S.A. --- (METERING.COM) --- August 6, 2009 - Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. has announced the launch of a $6 million smart grid pilot program in northwest Queens that will test how various technologies support efforts to modernize the electric grid and help customers use energy more efficiently and save on their electricity bills.

Jim Cherrie, director, Edison SmartConnectâ„¢ confirmed for Smart Metering West Cost...

Jim Cherrie is the director of Edison SmartConnect™, Southern California Edison’s (SCE) award winning program to replace the company’s 5.3 million electricity meters with “smart” meters that will enable customers to better manage their energy use and SCE to better manage its electricity grid.

His responsibilities include product development, contract management, quality management, and field deployment.

Edison SmartConnect™ could be the information backbone for technologies that measure usage and power quality, and enable dynamic pricing and demand response. The project is leveraging commercially available components by using open designs for both the metering and communications devices to provide a long-lived, flexible and sustainable technology platform. Open design facilitates the present day and future technology developments in home connectivity, distribution grid intelligence, and distributed generation, all of which could leverage the advanced metering infrastructure technology.

Expected to cost more than $1 billion and to take 4 years to complete, the Edison SmartConnect™ program is a major undertaking expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in California while contributing to a more reliable power grid.

Cherrie joined SCE in 2007. Previously, he worked for seven years with Sempra Energy, most recently as vice president of marketing for Sempra Energy Solutions. Before that he held several management positions with Scottish Power, where he worked for over 20 years. His background includes managing industry alliances, product development, technology management, quality management, program management, customer service, marketing, transmission, and distribution.

Cherrie holds an MBA with distinction from Dundee Business School in the UK.
