Nairobi, Kenya — (METERING.COM) — October 19, 2006 – Kenya Power & Lighting Company has put its planned deployment of prepayment meters on hold for the foreseeable future. The postponement is as a result of the introduction of other billing improvement measures.
A prepayment pilot was announced by KPLC earlier this year, and six companies tendered, but no awards have yet been made. In the meantime the utility has introduced a facility whereby customers can make enquiries about their bills using text messaging (SMS) via their cell phones. It is also working with local banks to establish the possibility of making bill payments via SMS.
A spokesman says that these new initiatives are less costly and quicker to implement, but that the prepayment deployment would be looked at again once the interim measures had all been put in place.
