IDC Energy issues new report on utility IT/OT integration


The report ‘IDC MarketScape IT and OT Integration Service Providers For EMEA Utilities 2017 Vendor‘ provides an insight on measures being implemented by smart grid firms in helping energy distribution companies to optimise their operations by combining IT and OT technologies.

The report is a discussion of services being offered by Accenture, Atos, Capgemini, CGI, IBM, Infosys, OMNETRIC Group, Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro to utility companies in EMEA.

According to the findings, the demand for IT/OT integration by utility firms in the EMEA region is on the rise under efforts to enhance the reliability of grid networks through improved assets management.

Jean-Francois Segalotto, manager of research at IDC Energy Insights in EMEA, said: “In utilities, operational technologies have historically played a role in ‘keeping the lights on.’ Their scope was to protect the assets (both plants and networks) and to secure the delivery of commodities to the final customers.”

However, with the rising adoption of smart grids, the need by utilities to come up with new business models and digitalisation of energy distribution networks is driving the need to combine IT and OT.

The increase in demand has also pushed smart grid companies to develop innovative solutions and services for simplified IT/OT integration.

The research firm states the smart grid market in EMEA is witnessing an increase in partnerships and acquisition deals between smart grid, engineering and specialised companies as part of efforts to improve the competence of OT. Some of the findings included in the report include:

  • Platform-based offerings are maturing and becoming the pillar of many vendors’ value propositions. IDC expects to see an increase also in industry collaborative cloud platforms.
  • Some of the vendors analysed consistently feature among the industry’s most innovative services organisations. They have dedicated innovation networks and a comprehensive ecosystem of business and technology partners that help customers bridge the skill resource gap, lower technology risk and cost of ownership, and link to emerging innovation. This adds to solid thought leadership and a clear vision of the transformation of the energy ecosystem, both regionally and locally.
  • Service pricing for IT/OT integration services has evolved compared with the recent past. All vendors have introduced more or less sophisticated performance-based pricing models, with output- and outcome-based models slowly supplanting classic time-and-materials and fixed-price arrangements.
