Far East and China to represent 22% of global Machine-to-Machine applications by 2019

Juniper Research forecasts that the global M2M sector will deliver service revenues of over US$40 bn by 2019

A new study by UK market research specialist Juniper Research indicates that the Far East and China will account for 22% of global cellular Machine-to-Machine communications by 2019, driven by smart metering and connected vehicle applications.

Juniper Research attributes the growth in Machine-to-Machine communications to efforts by China’s major carriers in smart metering and connected cars.

Author of the “M2M – In an IoT World” whitepaper, Anthony Cox, said: “China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile have all made strides to embrace M2M.

“In many cases, they are providing end-to-end solutions, supported by systems integration and dedicated charging policies.”

The firm notes that M2M applications in these regions represented 15% of global Machine-to-Machine applications in 2014, and will jump by 7% to 22% by 2019.

Despite this, pioneering countries in the Internet of Things market, namely North America and Western Europe will still lead in terms of M2M adoption.

China’s smart grid investments

The UK company stated that the accelerated growth of Machine-to-Machine applications in China, is boosted by the State Grid Corporation of China’s plans to invest US$68.7bn in smart grid technologies this year.

It added that the revenue generated from smart metering (per device) is constrained due to the complexity in meter deployments and the absence of a clear business model.

Through the study, the trend toward connected ecosystems was identified – moving from simple Machine-to-Machine connectivity between devices. Juniper states that the creation of these ‘ecosystems’ have given rise to the application of big data analytics, with millions of devices gathering data on an ongoing basis.

The research also found that there was growing interest in ‘white space’ spectrum which could be used for the creation of several Machine-to-Machine applications and services. The available spectrum, says Juniper, will see the ‘number of M2M modules to proliferate, due to the lower cost and power requirements of modules designed to function in [white space] spectrum.’
