Ghana residents embrace pay-as-you-go meters

Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana — (METERING.COM) — July 10, 2008 – After initial misgivings, residents in Sekondi-Takoradi are now enthusiastic about having a prepayment (pay-as-you-go) meter installed in their homes, saying that they are paying less for power with the new system.

When the Electricity Company of Ghana first introduced the meters, in an attempt to reduce theft of power and improve revenues, there was a good deal of dissatisfaction on the part of residents. However the deployment went ahead, and now that the benefits are recognized, residents who have not yet had the prepayment meters installed are visiting the ECG’s offices asking when they are likely to receive one.

Residents say the improved control they have over their consumption – for example, being made aware of what it costs to run each electric appliance – has allowed them to change their behavior and thus to save on their energy bills.
