Smart Energy International Excellence Awards: Middle East – 5 May 2009

On behalf of Spintelligent and Smart Energy International magazine – the leading global provider of information, analysis and trading spaces for the global utility meter-to-cash, smart grid and customer-end technology sector, it was with great pleasure to announce the 2009 Smart Energy International Excellence Awards for the Middle East.

The awards programme forms part of an international series which takes place in Europe, USA, Latin America and Africa that recognises and encourages excellence in the power and utility sector.

DEWA – Utility Leadership Award

The criterion for the category of Leadership is: recognises courage, dedication and a utility leader’s ability to be an instrument of change – both in an organizational context and within his/her wider community.

The judging panel were most impressed by the Leadership demonstrated in the pioneering and world-class projects being undertaken by the utility inline with its vision: ‘A recognized World-Class Utility’ and mission: "Meeting customer satisfaction and promoting Dubai’s vision through delivering water & electricity services by a competent workforce at world-class level of reliability, efficiency, safety and environment, supporting resources sustainability"

The panel commended DEWA for demonstrating it’s vision and mission with initiatives such as ‘mPay services’, the installation of technologies to minimizes power losses and reduce CO2 emissions as well as the decision by Leadership within the utility to not increase in power or water prices in the wake of Dubai’s rapid urban expansion but to rather focus will now be on increasing operational efficiencies.

NEPCO (Jordan) – Metering Project Award

The criterion for the category of Metering Project is: most innovative implementation of advanced metering in Middle Eastern utilities, creating sustainable and efficient energy sector.

The judging panel found the complexity and scope detailed in the NEPCO project submission to be the most compelling. The project, including a new AMR and billing system, is geared to serve the newly independent power producer (CEGCO) and the transmission utility (NEPCO)

Through this system both parties are able to share the monitoring, reporting and billing capabilities which will accommodate the needs of a growing electricity market. With an accurate metering system, providing near real-time information, NEPCO have placed customer satisfaction at the top of their service offering.  

The award was accepted by Eng. Abeer Adaileh on behalf of NEPCO (Jordan)

Itron-Actaris – Metering Technology Award

The criterion for the category of Metering Technology recognizes: excellence amongst Middle-East electricity and water utilities and meter manufacturers with respect to service initiatives or technologies and solutions in the Middle-East power and utilities markets.

The judging panel was most impressed by the metering technology pioneered and demonstrated in the world-class project, The Pearl Qatar, the Smart Island being undertaken by the company inline with its vision.

Mr. Rene Gours received the Smart Energy International Excellence: Middle East Award 2009, in the category of Metering Technology.
