New water meters in Ghana

Accra, Ghana — (METERING.COM) — October 8, 2008 – Aqua Vitens Rand Limited (AVRL), operator of the Ghana Water Company, has announced that it is introducing new water meters in order to capture all flat rate customers into the metering system to ensure the fair and equitable distribution of water.

Andrew Barber, managing director of AVRL, was quoted as saying the company had already introduced new electronic water meters across its supply and treatment network to monitor the flow of water on a daily basis.

The announcement was made at the launch of a new meter and instrument workshop on AVRL’s premises. The facility also will function as a repair center for meters.

Some 30,000 meters have been acquired from the Netherlands for the program.

The original workshop was established in the 1960s but collapsed as a result of poor administration and management. It was then revived in 1996.

AVRL is a joint venture of Vitens-Evides International and Rand Water Services Pty (South Africa) and was awarded a five year management contract of Ghana Water Company in 2006.
