The development targeting industrial and commercial customers is said to fall under the government owned firm’s efforts to help its customers to implement sustainable energy use.
According to a local publication, the project aims to install 12,000 smart meters by the end of 2017.
Omar Al Wahaibi, CEO of Nama Group, commented: “We have just started a project to implement Automated Meter Reading for high value customers; these are customers who consume more than 150 megawatt-hours (MWh) per annum.
“We are leveraging new technology to enhance the customer experience,” added Wahaibi.
[quote] Once completed, the smart meters are also expected to allow the utility to implement a Time of Use (ToU) tariff programme, simplify and speed up the processing of meter data as well as detect power theft.
At the moment, Nama Group is reported to be accessing the bidding documents for the provision of the Automated Meter Reading solution.
Smart meters projects
On a related note, in Uzbekistan, Shenzhen Kaifa Technology signed an agreement with Korean telecommunications firm KT Corporation for the rollout of an advanced electricity metering project.
The US$1.1 billion smart metering project is financed by the Asian Development Bank.
The Chinese electrical equipment manufacturer (Shenzhen Kaifa Technology) will provide one million electric smart meters with robust its management system as Head End System (HES), and Meter Data Management System (MDMS) for the three major cities in the Republic of Uzbekistan.
In addition to the deployment of the smart meter units, Shenzhen Kaifa will be responsible for the maintenance of the advanced meter infrastructure. The company plans to install the smart meter systems in one million households in Samarkand, Jejak, and Buhkara in Uzbekistan, over the next two years and four months.
Commenting on the signing of the agreement, S.F. Zhang, general manager at Shenzhen Kaifa Technology, said: “We are very excited and proud to deliver Kaifa’s smart energy solution to Uzbekisan households.”
