Lagos, Nigeria — (METERING.COM) — October 10, 2006 – In partnership with some local financial institutions, the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) has introduced an online payment method which will make the lives of electricity consumers easier.
In the past these customers had to visit PHCN cash centers to pay their electricity bills. The centers were often far away from work or home, long queues were experienced, and payments were often not credited timeously, resulting in unfair disconnection.
Today, thanks to collaboration between PHCN and leading banks in the country, customers can pay their bills at any branch of the 21 banks that have agreed to be part of the scheme. The banks are connected to Interswitch Limited, facilitating the transfer of payments.
After a successful pilot project, the payment scheme was introduced to the public by way of radio announcements and newspaper advertisements. Take-up has been good, and utilities have experienced improved cash flow.
