Plan to assemble prepayment meters in Kenya

Nairobi, Kenya — (METERING.COM) — January 14, 2009 – Active Partners Group (K) Ltd, the Kenyan subsidiary of the Sudan-based Active Partners Group, has unveiled a plan to set up a $7 million prepayment meter assembly plant in Kenya.

According to a local press report the proposed plant is scheduled to begin operations in June, and further investment is expected in line with increased demand for the prepayment meters. Key assembly functions are to be outsourced to local artisans in order to promote local employment creation.

The group is reported to be hoping to use its Kenyan base as a springboard to expand its market reach to countries such as Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

"Because of Kenya’s infrastructure, it is easier for us to be based in Kenya, manufacture and export in the region,” Mike Lucas, APG (K) office managing director, was quoted as saying.

The Active Partners Group is a multinational with interests in electrification and power, telecoms, IT, construction and engineering services.
