Enugu, Nigeria — (METERING.COM) — October 14, 2008 – Over the past two years the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) has received income of approximately N90 million (US$0.76 million) per month from the 70,000 prepaid meters installed mainly in the urban centers in the south-east of the country.
Desmond Eboh, managing director of SABRUD Consortium Nigeria Limited, consultants to the PHCN and operators of the prepaid metering system in Enugu zone, was quoted as saying that this translated into about N2.16 billion (US$18.3 million) over the period.
Eboh said that currently the consortium has 13 business units in the south-east and has connected seven in Enugu, Onitsha, Awka, Ogidi, Awada, Abakpa and Nike.
In addition to the 70,000 prepaid meters installed to date a further 60,000 prepaid meters are ready for installation in Enugu zone. Moreover, the company has invested in IT to provide SMS and scratch card recharge facilities for customers.
