Dar es Salaam, Tanzania — (METERING.COM) — June 26, 2007 – In the past the prepayment meters used by customers of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) were manufactured in South Africa – but this will change now that an agreement between the utility and meter manufacturer Conlog has been reached. From now on these meters will be manufactured and serviced in Tanzania, and this will improve Tanesco’s plans for rollout across the country.
Prepayment, or pay-as-you-go meters, were first introduced in the country about ten years ago. Many customers enjoy the benefit of being able to pay for their power usage up front, managing their consumption and avoiding the need for budgeting in order to pay monthly energy bills.
The new arrangements will suit both Tanesco and Conlog, which will now be able to offer local facilities for both supply and repair of meters, leading to quicker turnaround times. Meters will be stored at Achelis (Tanganyika) Limited, an independent local company representing several manufacturers.
