Retrenched utility personnel steal power

Kampala, Uganda — (METERING.COM) — May 22, 2007 – When the Uganda Electricity Board was broken up into several companies, many of its employees were retrenched – and today they are making a living by connecting energy users to the grid illegally.

Ugandan energy customers have to contend with regular blackouts, but there are certain lines – in particular those that connect state buildings and army barracks to the grid – that are never disconnected. Some former UEB personnel are using their technical expertise to connect home or business owners to these dedicated lines, and/or to bypass their meters. Many customers are willing to pay for these ‘services’ rather than do without power or pay the full price for the energy they use.
