Ugandan water looks to prepayment

Kampala, Uganda — (METERING.COM) — August 9, 2006 – Uganda’s National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NW&SC) has announced plans to introduce a pre-paid water metering system to address the water needs of the poor and curb the growth of unscrupulous water dealing.

Managing director of NW&SC, William Muhairwe, informed members of the natural resources committee that the utility would spend over US$3.5 million implementing the project. The pilot would be launched in the Kampala suburb of Kisenyi.

Muhairwe added: “With the new system, poor people in urban centers will be able to get water cheaply using cards or coins.”
