Verizon announces strategy to accelerate IoT adoption


US broadband and telecommunications company Verizon has announced a global strategy to simplify Internet of Things (IoT) and accelerate its adoption through a range of new services and solutions.

According to M2M World News, Verizon’s global strategy to aid IoT adoption includes the launch of ‘ThingSpace’ – a new IoT platform that allows developers to create applications, allows customers to manage their devices and Verizon partners to market their services.

Other plans include the creation of a dedicated network core and connectivity options for next-generation IoT devices, driving innovation to address challenges in various industry verticals and commercialising the company’s big data analytics engine for IoT deployments, the company said in a statement.

In addition, the telecommunications company plans to deliver end-to-end smart cities solutions, including intelligent video, lighting and traffic management.

According to Mike Lanman, senior vice president Enterprise Products at Verizon: “Continued innovation in smart cities, connected cars and wearables demonstrates that IoT is the future for how we will live and work.

“Despite the exciting potential, IoT is still too complex, too fragmented, too expensive to connect and too hard to scale. Success in that future relies on a leader that can cut through the complexity and change the IoT model.”

Partnering on IoT

Verizon‘s strategy for IoT expansion includes partnerships with various stakeholders in the energy industry, such as Intel, Renesas, as well as working with colleagues and universities across the US to reduce their carbon footprint by up to 20% through the use of clean technologies.

Push into smart cities

According to industry analysts, the smart city solutions market is projected to grow by more than 20% annually from 2015 to 2020

To keep up with demand for smart city solutions, Verizon has introduced applications for the connected car and smart grid, including GridWide and Verizon Share and Hum – a device created with the ability to predict car issues and alert the car owner about them, before a potentially problematic situation arises.

The New-Jersey based company claims that its solutions “will help municipalities integrate disparate systems, monitor traffic and safety conditions in real-time and manage their systems in a dynamic way to improve efficiency and public safety”.

Lanman concluded: “Smart cities are complex. They work best when their systems can coordinate and communicate with each other seamlessly.

“What is the correlation between a street light and public safety, or parking and traffic flow? Our intelligent solutions can be used as important tools for revitalizing urban life, stimulating economic development and making communities more dynamic, resilient, sustainable and secure.”
