Prepaid metering

The tender follows an announcement by power and energy minister Nasrul Hamid in 2014 of plans to resort to a prepaid electric metering system nationwide by 2021.

In May 2014, Itron’s Singapore office secured a deal with the national utility of Bangladesh, Titus Gas Transmission and Distribution Company, to install 8,600 prepaid meters in residential areas of the capital.

The project, valued at US$1.5m of which US$1m was funded by the Asian Development Bank, aims to reduce billing irregularities by the utility.

Titus was due to deploy prepaid meters in households in two areas of the capital Dhaka by March 2015.
