Bangladesh will have prepaid electric metering nationwide by 2021, power and energy minister Nasrul Hamid was quoted as saying over the weekend.
In a news item Energy Bangla reports that the comment was made at the signing of a contract between Dhaka Power Distribution Company Ltd (DPDC) and Bangladesh Diesel Plant Ltd (BDPL), under which BDPL will manufacture and install 10,000 prepaid electricity meters for DPDC in the Azimpur area of Dhaka over the next year.
DPDC is the largest power distribution company in Bangladesh. BDPL is an equipment manufacturing company, operated by the Bangladesh Army.
The prepay system being installed in Bangladesh is a smart card based system that was developed originally for the Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO) by the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
BUET has also developed a prepay gas meter, which is being trialed in Bangladesh.
