China looking at energy price hikes to encourage efficiency

chinese flagBeijing, China — (METERING.COM) — April 4, 2007 – The Chinese government is considering an increase in the wholesale price of natural gas of up to 10 per cent – only the second increase since December 2005. The gas price prevailing in China, which is government regulated, is considerably lower than international averages.

The government has gone on record about the need for consumers to embrace energy efficient measures, and to reduce energy consumption, and could well be contemplating energy price reforms as a means of achieving the targets they have set.
