Toyota reusing EV batteries for grid reliability


Chubu Electric Power and Toyota to commence electrified vehicle battery reuse and recycling verification project.

Japan’s Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. and Toyota Motor Corporation have announced their agreement to commence a verification project that entails the construction of a large-capacity storage battery system that reuses electrified vehicle batteries.

The project will include the examination of the recycling of used batteries.

Based on the results of this verification test, scheduled to begin in 2018, the two companies aim to introduce power generation capacity of approximately 10,000kW, equivalent to 10,000 batteries, in 2020.

The initial stage will involve nickel-metal hydride batteries, which are currently being used in large quantities in hybrid electric vehicles.

The two companies will re-use lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles by 2030.

Reuse of Batteries

The project is part of efforts by Chubu Electric to improve the operation of its electric power system. Energy storage is required to sustain the reliability of grid network due to fluctuations in renewable energy generation.

Chubu Electric Power and Toyota will consider establishing a mechanism to recycle reused batteries, by collecting materials such as rare-earth metals and re-utilising them.

As per “Toyota’s Challenge to Promote Widespread Use of Electrified Vehicles” announced in December 2017, the organisation is actively encouraging the use of electric vehicles.

Toyota is also pursuing the effective use of batteries and the development of social infrastructure that will support the widespread adoption of electrified vehicles.

Both Chubu Electric Power and Toyota will continue to develop a resource recycling society and a low-carbon society, through initiatives that promote the commercialisation of battery reuse and recycling.
