Lahore, Pakistan — (METERING.COM) — March 16, 2007 – After a successful trial, the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) will provide digital electricity meters to all its 2.7 million customers over the next seven years. The new meters will be read hourly, and customers will be able to handle the payment of their electricity bills using SMS (text message) technology.
LESCO hopes that the more frequent meter reading will assist it in the battle to contain theft of power. The company is currently involved in installing some 200,000 new meters and replacing 150,000 old ones annually, to ensure that all customers will have access to the new technology within the specified time frame. The meters will also allow LESCO to introduce corporate and customized billing initiatives, in order to improve customer service.
