Indian utility upgrades management of distribution system

In India, utility firm Noida Power Company (NPCL) announced that it has partnered with smart grid solutions provider ETAP to improve management of its grid network.

The utility company commissioned and deployed an advanced distribution management system (ADMS) developed by ETAP. The ADMS is expected to provide NPCL with real-time management of its grid network.

The project falls under efforts by the distributor to enhance the reliability of its system to better serve its growing customer base through automation of its energy distribution network.

It is believed the technology will help NPCL reduce power outages on its energy distribution system and enable the utility to automate management of its substations and grid sensors by integrating SCADA, distribution and outage management systems.

Management of energy distribution systems

The development is one of many programmes by stakeholders in the Indian energy sector to ensure the Asian country achieves a reliable grid network by applying various measures, such as the installation of smart meters and other smart grid technologies, to ensure real-time management of energy distribution networks.

In September 2016, a local Engineering firm, Mindteck, was selected by the Indian government to implement a smart grid pilot in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK).

The smart grid pilot will include the installation of advanced metering infrastructure and smart home automation technologies in selected residential premises at the IIT-Kanpur campus and surrounding areas.

The initiative is partly funded by the Indian Ministry of Power, the Indian government and IIT-Kanpur. [Chinese firm partners with Indian gov on AMI rollout].

The programme will allow deployment of single-phase and three-phase smart meters, SCADA, meter data acquisition and meter data management systems to ensure accurate billing, real-time management of the network and implementation of energy conservation measures.

In addition, participants of the smart grid pilot will be equipped with roof top solar to allow them to generate their own electricity for use during peak demands.
