Under the collaboration, Kokam is developing a 36MWh energy storage system for South Korea’s largest power utility company.
KEPCO will use the system to provide frequency regulation at its sub-station in the town of Non-Gong in Dalseong County.
The system will comprise solution provider’s two Lithium Ion battery technologies the Ultra High Power Nickel Manganese Cobalt and the Nano battery solutions.
The development of the system began in June and is expected to be completed by December 2016. The project has also received the International Smart Grid Action 2016 Award (ISGAN) for frequency regulation.

The utility firm said that it is planning to install 500MWh of energy storage capacity for frequency regulation by the end of 2017. [KEPCO plans nationwide rollout of smart grid tech].
In March, KEPCO and Kokam announced the completion of 24MW and 16MW storage systems.
Energy storage systems development
In related news, in late July, E.ON Climate and Renewables North America signed a deal with Tucson Electric Power to provide frequency response and voltage control from a grid-scale storage facility.
The 10MW battery energy storage facility with a 2MW solar array will be located adjacent to the University of Arizona Science and Technology Park southeast of Tucson.
Through the Iron Horse Battery Energy Storage Project, E.ON will supplement TEP’s grid management as well as provide energy to TEP from its 6.6 MW Tech Park Solar and 13.2 MW Valencia Solar facilities. E.ON has also partnered on the turnkey construction of TEP’s 17.2 MW solar facility at the Fort Huachuca Army Base near Sierra Vista, Arizona.
