In India, electricity distributor Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) has last week announced plans to upgrade its power transmission system as part of a smart grid project in Gurgaon, south of Delhi.
According to a local publication, the smart grid project, which aims to improve supply reliability, will start with the development of an industrial ‘Cyber City’ infrastructure.
NYOOZ reported that the power distributor has begun drafting tenders due to be issued in the Q1 of 2016.
Implementation of the Cyber City smart grid project, including the laying of a 500km cable and increasing the number of transformers from the current 750 to 1,200, has been divided into three divisions namely sectors 1-57, 58-115 and IMT Manesar.
The energy provider is expecting will spend Rs12 000 crore (US$180.8 million) in covering sectors 1-57 first.
DHBVN said it will convert all power supply systems into double capacity systems and convert 11kv power lines to 33kv in sector 1-57 first.
A quarter of the capital for the first phase will be funded by the Cyber City centre and 75% will be raised through a loan.
Commenting on the development, Sanjeev Chopra, general manager of DHBVN said, once successfully installed, the Cyber City’s smart grid project will be an example for smart grids across the country.
Smart grid project in Bangalore-India
In other smart grid news, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) has in October embarked on a smart grid pilot project to study the possibilities of smart grid technology at a larger scale.
Metering & Smart Energy International reported the pilot in Chandapura, a suburb in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka, is set to benefit 2,000 urban and rural consumers as part of the utility’s ongoing efforts to reduce electricity consumption and transmission losses.
The development follows Bescom’s previous failure to implement two smart grid pilot projects, which targeted urban consumers due to a lack of adequate planning from a US-based agency KEMA and USAID, Bescom managing director Pankaj Kumar Pandey told the The India Times.
To provide better load management of power, the project is expected to facilitate effective online recording and monitoring of energy as well as better control of the energy exchanges in the distribution system to reduce operational errors.
