In a statement, TEPCO said it signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the energy management firm to improve its customer services by using a wide range of IoT services offered by Landis+Gyr smart meter and smart grid infrastructure.
The MoU is expected to help TEPCO to increase consumer energy efficiency savings as well as help the energy provider to some 28 million metering points to design and adopt new business models.
The MoU also signals a commitment from both parties to cooperate in building an IoT strategy that goes far beyond advanced metering applications to develop other ways for TEPCO to monetize their technology investments and open new revenue streams, highlights a press statement.
Under their partnership on AMI rollout, the two have to date installed some 13.5 million smart meters with up to 500,000 installations per month under efforts to complete the programme by 2020, three years ahead of the original rollout plan.
The utility’s smart meter programme is said to be largest smart grid deployment and fastest AMI rollout initiative.
Landis+Gyr claim its IoT communications network Gridstream is allowing TEPCO to securely acquire, process and communicate up to 600 million daily smart meter reads.

Smart grid funding
Despite investing to have innovative smart grid technologies integrated within its grid system, TEPCO is also providing funding towards research, development, and testing of new energy solutions.
In May, the energy distributor announced that it will provide funding towards the operation of the Energy Web Foundation (EWF). The EWF is a non-profit organisation established by US environmental agency Rocky Mountain Institute and energy blockchain technology developer Grid Singularity to accelerate the commercial deployment of blockchain technology in the energy industry.
EWF is partnering with energy regulators, smart grid technology standardisation bodies and developers of smart grid solutions in developing, testing and deploying an open source energy blockchain technology. Read more…
