Philippine consumers oppose rate hike

The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has applied for two rates increases in recent years. Following the decision of the country’s Supreme Court to order the utility to refund excess charges dating back to 1994, however, a group of electricity consumers wants the Philippine government’s Energy Regulatory Commission to dismiss Meralco’s petition.

The National Association of Electric Consumer for Reforms, one of the groups opposing Meralco’s application for a rate hike, said it is confident the Commission will rule in its favour.
