Power firm gets tough with energy thieves

Jakarta, IN — (METERING.COM) — July 12, 2006 – Indonesian power company PLN has today announced that it is to sue consumers who attempt to illegally steal power supply. Currently energy theft is costing the provider around Rp180 billion (US$4 billion) a month.

PLN’s distribution manager for West Java and Banten, Murtaqi Syamsuddin, commented that PLN’s primary concern was power theft by the managements of industrial estates, hotels and office buildings. In order to combat this surprise checks of homes and business’s would be conducted for meter and supply line tampering.

Murtaqi also indicated that a company, as yet unidentified, was supplying equipment for meter tampering and energy flow disruption.
