S.Korea agrees to use IEC standards in smart grid projects

The IEC, South Korea's Jeju province and the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) this week signed a MoU on smart grid adoption.

The MoU aims to accelerate adoption of smart grids, EVs and renewable energy generation technologies for a reduction of Jeju province’s carbon emissions.

Under the agreement, the province will implement smart grids, EVs, smart cities, microgrids and renewable energy generation projects and technologies in line with IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standards.

In addition, the province will participate in improving IEC standards by communicating technology needs, requirements and status with the commission via KATS.

IEC General Secretary Frans Vreeswijk said: “Proprietary Standards reduce interoperability and cross-manufacturer solutions.

“By building infrastructure and regulations that are based on IEC International Standards, governments such as Jeju are able to better satisfy the needs of citizens while reducing costs,” added Vreeswijk.

Mr Jeh Dae-shik, Administrator of the KATS reiterated that: “… In this context the KATS actively participates in international standardisation activities with the aim to harmonize Korean Standards with IEC and ISO International Standards.”

EV- smart grid interoperability

[quote]Meanwhile, this March, US based EV smart grid interoperability solutions provider eMotorWerks launched a universal charging station adapter for EV Supply Equipment (EVSE).

According to eMotorWerks, the adapter ‘JuicePlug’ will enable California’s pre-existing non-networked charging stations connectivity with EV drivers using smart devices.

The solutions provider says the launch of the device will allow every EV driver in California’s PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E service territories to participate in company’s smart grid EV charging programmes including the JuicePoints rewards program.

The adapter is said manages the time and rate of an EV charging in coordination with eMotorWerks’ cloud-based JuiceNet smart-grid charging platform, which controls distributed energy loads across the grid.

The device includes an Android mobile app which drivers can use to access ToU charging fees as well as their charging history and real-time data on the company’s dashboard.

eMotorWerks said it believes the development will also help the power industry better balance local and regional grids, future proof their operations for expanding renewable energy generation and the mass adoption of electric vehicles.
