The smart meters will be installed for TPDDL customers whose electricity usage is above 10KW/h per month.
According to a local media, TPDDL is investing $29.8 million towards the smart meters project.
Smart meters connectivity
In addition to the smart meters, Landis+Gyr will supply and construct the communications infrastructure to provide connectivity between the smart meters and the utility company.
The project will enable TPDDL to introduce new demand response and energy efficiency programmes to help consumers reduce their energy usage and costs.
The smart meters will enable the energy provider to communicate real-time energy usage and grid status data to its customers.
The $29.8 million smart meters investment is expected to help TPDDL to save 25MW of energy during peak demand periods.
The advanced metering system will assist the energy provider to reduce costs associated with meter tampering.
TPDDL plans to expand its smart meters programme to consumers using 5kw/h per month.
The project falls under efforts by TPDDL to line up with recommendations set by the Indian government in January 2016 for utilities to deploy smart meters, to improve their energy billing and reduce carbon emissions.
Energy storage and grid stability
In mid-January, AES India and Mitsubishi announced their partnership to deliver a grid-scale energy storage array to the electric grid operated by TPDDL.
The two companies will develop and own the 10MW Advancion energy storage array, which will demonstrate peak load management and is expected to increase system flexibility and support high levels of reliability for more than 7 million customers of TPDDL
According to a release, this is the first grid-scale project in India, and part of a larger global trend to solve critical infrastructure challenges using battery-based energy storage.
Mr. Praveer Sinha, CEO of TPDDL, said: “For a rooftop solar program to be successful, it is important for the distribution network to integrate it with energy storage solutions to take care of power generation spikes and fluctuations, system stability, reactive power compensation and grid emergencies.
“Tata Power-DDL has implemented many smart grid technologies and is privileged to implement India’s first utility-scale 10 MW storage solution with AES and Mitsubishi Corporation. This will prove to be an important learning for developing integrated rooftop solar and storage solutions for India.”
