Japan's Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has announced 500,000 equity investment in English residential battery company Moixa Energy Holdings.Hirokazu Yamaguchi, executive general manager, Global Innovation and Investments at TEPCO, said: "We are excited to welcome Moixa to our modest, but growing portfolio of innovative companies. Moixa has developed a robust battery storage and smart energy-sharing platform. We look forward to gaining hands-on experience for the benefit of our customers."
David Thomlinson, chairman of Moixa and former global head of energy at Accenture, said, "Having previously worked with TEPCO, I am particularly pleased to be able to partner with this leading Japanese corporate, to bring the Moixa technology to new markets."
A company release notes that the energy industry is undergoing a fundamental and disruptive change enabled by new technologies and driven by customers. Technologies such as distributed solar and batteries are enabling innovative new ways of producing, consuming and sharing of energy. This in turn is setting the stage for customers to increasingly and proactively engage in the energy industry as "prosumers" who both produce and consume energy.
Moixa offers a compact and affordable smart battery for residential customers that helps households save money by storing spare solar or cheap tariff electricity. In addition, their innovative cloud-based GridShare platform helps manage and aggregate distributed storage resources, and thereby, deliver grid services and savings for the energy system.
Energy storage pilot
Last year, Japanese multinational conglomerate, Hitachi partnered with Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) and NEDO to evaluate the use of control technologies for energy storage systems in a test project on Izu Oshima Island.
The 1.5MW hybrid energy storage system is designed to address the challenge of integrating solar and wind power into the grid. The Tokyo-based multinational company is working with Hitachi Chemical and Shin-Kobe, lithium-ion battery manufacturer, to test the system on Izu Oshima Island, located approximately 100 kilometers south of Tokyo.
This development marks the second energy-storage demonstration project launched in the remote Izu Oshima archipelago over the past several months. Read more ...
