Zamboanga, Philippines — (METERING.COM) — April 4, 2007 – Utility revenue loss in the Philippines is not restricted to meter tampering – thieves in the Zamboanga region are stealing the meters themselves. Police believe that a syndicate is at work, stealing the meters and selling them to water concessionaires in other parts of the country.
The meters cost approximately $312 each, depending on the manufacturer. When they are stolen the first time, they are replaced free of charge; if it happens again the concessionaires are charged for replacements. The meters are fairly easy to steal, as they are located outside – a decision taken to make reading easier.
