Tokyo, Japan — (METERING.COM) — May 2, 2013 – Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has selected Toshiba to supply its communication system for its 27 million smart meter rollout over the next decade.
This will be the largest communication system in the world, according to Toshiba in a statement – breaking the group’s current record of 10 million endpoints for California IOU, Pacific Gas & Electric Company.
Toshiba will work as a prime contractor and system integrator of the communication system and will supply head-end system (HES) as well as concentrators. In building the system, the company will incorporate a global standard together with subsidiary Landis+Gyr.
Other participants will include NTT Data Corporation, which will operate and manage the system, and NEC Corporation.
In the statement Toshiba says that with TEPCO, the company also aims to promote the introduction of an integrated smart grid system around the world, based on the technologies and experiences as a system integrator in this project.
The smart meter supplier for the initiative is yet to be named.
