Metrix awards smart meter contract


Auckland, New Zealand — (METERING.COM) — August 4, 2008 – New Zealand utility Metrix has awarded a contract to Elster for a full-scale deployment of its EnergyAxis® System in Auckland. The system will feature 300,000 REX® smart meters built on a new meter platform conforming to IEC standards.

Metrix will use the EnergyAxis System to collect interval usage data daily across its entire smart meter population allowing it to offer value-added services to retail electric providers and consumers. In the future, retail electricity providers may use the interval metering data to offer flexible rate plans and empower consumer-driven energy conservation.
Luke Blincoe, general manager of Metrix, said, “Elster’s engagement with us on understanding the specific challenges associated with implementing smart metering in New Zealand has resulted in a solution that we are confident provides us with a strong platform for leadership in delivering innovative solutions for utility customers in New Zealand.”

Mike Kenyon, general manager of Elster Integrated Solutions Australia, said, “Our involvement with Metrix has resulted in the development of a number of key technologies necessary for deploying advanced metering infrastructures in the Oceania region. I am confident the outcome of this program will provide benefits to other customers in New Zealand and Australia.”

Metrix is the metering division of Mighty River Power, which through its retail business Mercury Energy provides electricity and gas services to residential and small business customers in the central and upper North Island, and to large business customers throughout New Zealand.
