New Zealand gas registry goes live

Wellington, New Zealand — (METERING.COM) — March 19, 2009 – A gas registry establishing a central repository of data relating to all gas connections, including retailers, distributors and meter owners in New Zealand, has gone live.

The registry, developed for the industry body, the Gas Industry Company (GIC), by local IT company Jade Software, is aimed at facilitating efficient and accurate switching of retailers by consumers by reducing the barriers to switching and providing certainty for market participants during change-over, including reconciling gas accounts between retailers.

The development of the registry was mandated under new switching rules which came into effect on March 13, 2008. The rules also lay out the process for switching customers between retailers.

Previously switching ran essentially on an improvised, goodwill basis.

Jade Software has a five-year contract to operate the registry.
