New Zealand utility adopts smart metering solution

Meridian Christchurch, New Zealand — (METERING.COM) — October 23, 2006 – Meridian Energy, New Zealand’s largest electricity generator which uses only renewable resources to supply over 200,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers, will deploy Cellnet’s UtiliNet® mesh radio technology with Arc Innovations’ Esmart™ smart metering device.

Cellnet provides intelligent communication and automation solutions to energy and water businesses worldwide, while Arc Innovations offers advanced meter infrastructure (AMI) services for use by New Zealand energy industry participants.

Arc Innovation’s engineering and product team has worked over the past year to design and deliver a UtiliNet-based version of Arc Innovation’s Esmart advanced meter device that provides two-way communication, on-demand reads, remote disconnect/reconnect, and pre-paid meter functionality.

Cellnet chief executive officer Mike Zito remarked, “With Arc Innovations, Cellnet will help successfully deliver the first phase of the largest residential fixed-network smart metering project in New Zealand. We are confident of the significant market potential for this relationship in New Zealand, Australia and beyond.”

“We are pleased to have concluded a supply arrangement with Cellnet,” says Helen Bremner, Arc Innovations chief executive officer. “We are showcasing our early positive AMI pilot results to New Zealand and Australian utility retailers. Arc Innovations believes that advanced metering infrastructure services will evolve into a market imperative for energy retail success world wide. Arc’s integrated AMI solution facilitates two-way communication and allows for greater interactivity between the retailer and their customers. This provides the retailer with the ability to provide value-added services not seen before. Retailers are very excited by that proposition.”
