SP AusNet secures 3G communications component for smart meter rollout from NetComm Wireless

Melbourne, Australia — (METERING.COM) — May 16, 2013 – SP AusNet has selected NetComm Wireless Limited, through its integration partner Ericsson, to supply the 3G communications card component for the Victorian government’s mandatory state-wide rollout of smart meters.

The initial order will represent revenue of Au$12.5 million (US$12.4 million) to NetComm Wireless.

SP AusNet will manage the replacement of existing mechanical meters with digital “smart” meters across northern and eastern Victoria. The 3G communications card designed by NetComm Wireless was purpose built to interoperate with SP AusNet’s preferred smart meter provider, Landis+Gyr.

“We are currently engaged in a wireless smart meter trial in North America and see excellent prospects for the deployment of 3G solutions to other smart grid projects across the globe,” said David Stewart, NetComm Wireless’ CEO and managing director. “In fact, this deployment of 3G smart meters into SP AusNet represents one of the largest 3G deployments in the world to date.”
