Brussels, Belgium — (METERING.COM) — July 26, 2013 – More than €1.9 billion has been invested in 320 electro-mobility research, development and demonstration (RD&D) projects in Europe since 2007, according to a recent report from the Joint Research Centre.
Of this investment, almost two-thirds is public funding, and about 80 percent of the funding covers R&D projects and 20 percent demonstration projects.
The report, Paving the way to electrified road transport, sought to gather information on all on-going or recently concluded RD&D projects on electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, which received EU or national public funding with a budget of more than €1 million. The aim was to assess which of the electric drive vehicles challenges are addressed by these projects and to identify potential gaps in the RD&D landscape in Europe.
Among the findings are that the R&D and demonstration projects are not evenly distributed across Europe, and that besides EU funding, the greatest levels of funding for these projects are in Germany, France and the U.K. Further, there is a strong dominance of the EU15 countries in the projects, compared with the countries of Eastern Europe.
Among the R&D projects, the greatest amounts are dedicated to research in energy storage, controls for vehicle energy management systems, power grid communication, battery life monitoring, etc., and the vehicle body and architecture field. This reflects the need to address major barriers for large scale EV diffusion such as “range anxiety” and cost.
Among the demonstration projects, fields include testing of smart grid developments related to electromobility, field tests of innovative ICT solutions, demonstrations of different types of EVs and of different business schemes, and promotion of public awareness.
Notably these demonstration projects have generally targeted the bigger cities and there is a high concentration of several projects in large capitals (i.e. Berlin, Rome, Paris, and London).
