Rome, Italy — (METERING.COM) — January 31, 2013 – The ADVANCED (Active Demand Value ANd Consumers Experiences Discovery) project was launched in Europe in December 2012,with the aim to stimulate the wider scale deployment of active demand and the harnessing of its benefits in the region.
Active demand has the potential to contribute to solving the challenges of electricity systems and offers significant benefits to consumers. It is considered one of the largest untapped energy resources, mainly because of insufficient consumer awareness regarding their own energy consumption and the benefits of altering it in line with the network constraints. There is also a lack of insight into active demand behavioral barriers and lack of availability of best practices for active demand design.
The ADVANCED project will develop actionable frameworks enabling residential and commercial and industrial consumers to participate in active demand. Also, the benefits of active demand for key stakeholders and its impacts on the electricity system, considering its potential contribution to system stability and efficiency, will be quantified according to different scenarios.
ADVANCED is coordinated by Enel Distribuzione and involves a consortium of European energy utilities (ERDF, Iberdrola Distribución, RWE), universities, research centers and consulting firmsin the energy sector (Comillas, Universidad Pontificia, Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei, TNO, VaasaETT), market research agency (TNS), and one of the first aggregators in Europe to offers active demand programs for commercial and industrial consumers (Entelios).
Each of the partner utilities will make available real data from pilot projects underway in their countries – ADDRESS pilots in Spain and France, E-De Main Germany and Enel Info+ in Italy. The project will also draw on data collected in VaasaETT’s database from 100 European active demand projects involving around 450,000 residential consumers.
The consortium will be supported by an advisory board composed of the main active demand stakeholders, including consumer representatives.
The two-year project has a budget of €4.1 million, of which €2.7 million is being funded by the European Community under the Seventh Framework Program.
