Ancient city gets modern meters

Ganja, Azerbaijan — (METERING.COM) — November 22, 2007 – Smart card prepayment (pay-as-you-go) meters are being deployed in the ancient city of Ganja, Azerbaijan’s second largest city, by the Ganja Regional Power Supply.

The company says that the chief advantage of these meters is that they prevent theft of energy and promote collection of revenues, while still allowing consumers normal access to the grid.

The meters have been supplied by Chinese manufacturer Shenzhen Star, and some of their employees have been seconded to Ganja to assist with installation. This is expected to take about six months, after which 70,000 homes in the city will have received the new meters.
