BREXIT’s impact on ESMIG

According to ESMIG President, Maher Chebbo, “As you well know, the historical decision of the UK to leave the European Union has stirred many discussions and raised many question marks on what will change and what will stay the same in all aspects of the European Union organisation and policies.

“First of all, it is important to say that once the UK evokes Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty (to leave the European Union), there will be a two-year period to negotiate the “divorce”. From the first news and statements it seems that there is no hurry in calling on this clause.”

Member are encouraged to stay

Chebbo noted: “I wish to be clear and firm when stating that we will encourage our members based in the UK to remain in ESMIG. Also, we will welcome as members other companies based in the UK that wish to join our association and fulfil the criteria in our bylaws.

[quote]“It is important to add that we are in close contact with our members based in the UK and have received confirmations from all of them that they wish to continue doing business in Europe and being involved in ESMIG.”

He added: “It is therefore safe to say that we do not expect any consequences from Brexit on ESMIG and its members for at least the next 2 years.”

Chebbo confirmed that BREXIT would be discussed at the next general meeting.
