In the UK, energy and home services provider British Gas will invest GBP500m in its connected home business over the next 5 years,.
Following its latest quarterly report, the Centrica company will be expanding its connected home Hive Active Heating product family, which includes Hive Active Plugs, Hive Motion Sensors, Hive Window and Door Sensors and Hive Active Lights.
Earlier this year, British Gas acquired energy and home monitoring hardware and services company Alert Me to expand its in-house developed Hive service further to include smart security and lighting systems.
Nina Bhatia, commercial director of British Gas, said: “Today we’ve fulfilled our promise by launching five products that help people control their entire homes – not just their energy from the palm of their hands.”
Iain Conn, CEO of Centrica, British Gas’ parent company, added: “We believe connected home offering will become increasingly important.
“We already have products in the market and have built high-quality, end-to-end capability in this area, with operating platform design and operation, hardware and software development, data analytics, installation and maintenance.”
Connected home through innovation
Bhatia said that the utility will continue to innovate and adapt its services and offerings as customer needs change.
“This is just the beginning. British Gas has been innovating for 200 years and we’re not about to stop. As our customer’s needs change, we’ll continue to maximise technology to help make their lives easier.
She added: “We’re making the connected home an easy and accessible reality by bringing the whole system to people from one, trusted provider.”
According to ITPro, British Gas announced that it would be pulling more data from smart meters after signing a deal with software company specialising in the area of distributed computing, Wandisco.
