Stockley Park, U.K. — (METERING.COM) — September 1, 2011 – This month British Gas will start to roll out next generation smart meters along with touch-screen displays that are able to show detailed information on energy use.

British Gas has already rolled out nearly 400,000 smart meters in homes and businesses across the U.K. The new next generation meter – a “dual fuel” electric and gas smart meter – has a number of upgraded systems designed to help British Gas customers be the most informed and empowered energy users in the country, the company claims.

The new display is the first of a new generation of displays, which are small and fully portable. Linking directly to the smart electricity and gas meters, they are able to show detailed information on energy use in pounds and pence and in real time. Users will be able to compare their gas and electricity use by the hour, day, week and year. They will also be able to set their own energy targets, and a simple traffic light system will act as a warning for when large amounts of electricity are being used.

“We want people to understand the energy they use and make informed choices about when to use it and how to save it,” said Dean Keeling, managing director of British Gas Smart Homes. “The new smart meters and energy displays are the foundations for doing this. That’s why we’re rolling out these user-friendly, sleek display units to British Gas homes.”

Both the new smart meters and the displays are from Landis+Gyr, which was awarded a contract concluded last year to deploy up to one million “dual fuel” electric and gas smart meters and displays.

British Gas aims to have 2 million smart meters installed by the end of 2012.
