These officers from the Council’s Energy and Sustainability team have been evaluating how smart technologies can not only improve water efficiency, but also reduce the energy costs associated with water distribution systems.
The project called ‘WISDOM’, includes smart meters measuring water usage wirelessly at selected properties in Cardiff and giving feedback to residents on how to use water more efficiently. It involves 11 partner organisation across Europe and is also testing a simulated sewer overflow warning system trialled in west Wales. [South East Water IoT trial aims to transform water networks]
This system is a more energy efficient cleanwater distribution network at a site in north Wales and a scheme protecting groundwater from pollution in the La Spezia province of Italy.
Furthermore, in Nantes in western France, the project is testing how the warmth from waste bathroom shower water can be reused to help heat a property using a process known as Grey Water Heat Recovery.
Promoting water efficiency
Cabinet member for Transport, Planning and Sustainability, councillor Ramesh Patel said: “It is essential that we increase user awareness and collectively modify our behaviour towards resources such as water. That is why I am delighted that City of Cardiff Council has played such a leading role in this important water usage project. Results from these pilot schemes will influence decision-makers in the future and ultimately influence the way we use water.”
Water demand manager at Dŵr Cymru/ Welsh Water, Andy Blackhall said: “The WISDOM project has provided Welsh Water with the opportunity to research how new technologies can help to improve the service we deliver to our customers. WISDOM has been a fantastic opportunity to collaborate internationally with major organisations such as Intel Labs, Kamstrup (Denmark) and Imperial College London using their extensive experience to help us develop our policies towards more resilient water networks. The results from this pilot project will contribute in a positive way towards the development of our future business plans.”
The WISDOM project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration.
