DLMS News – A new internet site for the DLMS user association
The DLMS UA’s role is to support meter data exchange; it helps to optimise investments by guaranteeing the inter-operability of equipment from different manufacturers. The definition and super-vision of amendments to technical specifications, in co-operation with national and international standards organisations, requires us to have many documents at hand or easily available anywhere. Furthermore, there should be a set of pictures available to replace demo slides. We operate in a multi-language environment, with members from all around the world, so the ability to make presentations in different languages is certainly a ‘nice to have’!
And our new homepage www.dlms.com is solving the need. Our first aim was to have simple access to the available data. The main structuring elements are ‘Information’, ‘Organisation’ and ‘Documentation’. In addition links (for example to members and standards bodies) and a jump back to the opening page are available, which allows visitors to restart in another language. The news list provides the reader with a chronological concise update list, while hyperlinks allow direct access to new features.
The DLMS UA is a non-profit organisation, but members pay contributions and therefore have a right to exclusive access to password protected pages. The COSEM (Companion Specification for Energy Metering) documents provide a typical example. Excerpts are generally available, but the full documents are password protected. They allow a comfortable use of hyperlinks (table of contents, references, footnotes etc) and can be used by developers world-wide without the need to carry heavy documents.
Other protected pages are reserved for the management of the DLMS UA to keep track of the meetings and decisions taken. Members of a working group also have their protected page. It is under the control of the working group convenor, who as a rule uses this tool to structure his field, to describe the content of the elements and to present documents for downloading or viewing.
The site is up and running. It fulfils actual needs, but there is still room for enhancements. We plan to build in interactive possibilities to serve the members of the DLMS UA even better.
