International utility company E.ON has joined a 500-plus member strong, business-led movement to suspend all marketing activity on the Facebook and Instagram social media platforms, as part of an effort to force the owner of the platforms to take stronger action against hate-speech.
A statement from the company reads: “At E.ON, we act in line with essential values, such as respect, diversity and tolerance. We expressly and resolutely oppose racism, hate speech and discrimination. We also expect this clear attitude from our partners. In this context, we consider it our responsibility to review our commitment and our role on Facebook and Instagram.
The E.ON Group will therefore discontinue all ads, posts and activities on Facebook and Instagram until further notice. We hereby take a stand against hate speech, discrimination and intolerance.”
Membership of the ‘Stop Hate For Profit’ initiative has been growing in recent days, which aims to pressure the social media giant into taking stronger measures to prevent the spread of hate speech, misinformation and discrimination on its platform.
