Spanish electric utility Endesa has released the names of the 40 successful candidates to participate in the company’s first Hackathon, aimed at creating new mobile solutions to help customers optimise their energy usage.
The 40 selected programmers, entrepreneurs and designers will be divided into teams of four and are tasked with developing innovative mobile solutions for consumers to use energy more efficiently.
Endesa’s Hackathon event will be held on 27 November and 28 November.
The competition attracted entries from the US, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Mexico, and Santo Domingo.
The utility said that 20% of candidates chosen have an entrepreneurial profile.
Improving consumer energy efficiency
During the competition, coordinated by international experts who will coordinate the work following the latest innovation methodologies like Design Thinking. the 40 finalists selected to participate will work together to design solutions for this challenge, placing the customer at the centre in the development process.
Design Thinking is a discipline of innovation to match the needs of people with what is technologically feasible and what a viable business strategy can make valuable for the customer and an opportunity for the market.
An Endesa statement adds that the jury will evaluate each proposal to be presented in just three minutes. The winning team will receive a prize of €6,000, and the teams in second and third place will receive €3,000 and €1,000 respectively.
Winning ideas will be recognised and the successful candidates will develop their projects further alongside Endesa.
In addition to the Hackathon, Endesa is running another competition, “which challenges the global community of developers experienced in Big Data to transform the future of energy in Spain,” says the utility’s website.
It adds that the ‘Datathon’ is a 100% digital, crowdsourcing opportunity to present disruptive proposals and solutions within the energy sector using big data.
The Endesa Datathon will include experts and thought leaders on the Internet of Things, Supercomputing and big data to find solutions for the Spanish electricity market.
