Marsa, Malta — (METERING.COM) — May 6, 2009 – Malta’s national electric utility Enemalta announced yesterday the start of a pilot project involving the installation of smart meters and water probes.

Installation is being made at 5,000 sites selected for participation, with the first smart meters and probes being installed at Swieqi.

The pilot will lead to smart meters and probes being installed nationwide over the next five years. The exercise will cost about €40 million.

Enemalta said the meters and probes will mean that Malta will start using the latest technology “for the benefit of consumers and corporations”. Standing out are efficiency and instantaneous response to clients’ needs, Enemalta continued.

The solution is being provided by IBM (see AMI and smart grid for Malta).
