EnergiMidt begins pilot to develop smart city services

Danish energy and broadband company EnergiMidt and Paradox Engineering have teamed to develop smart city networks and provide advanced services to customers in Denmark.

Swiss technology company Paradox Engineering will work with EnergiMidt to develop a smart lighting and smart parking network as part of a smart city pilot project in the village of Almind, in the community of Viborg, Denmark.

The pilot will test smart lighting and smart parking solutions to determine whether the network could be extended to other smart urban services such as wi-fi hot spots, solid waste management and smart metering, states ITS International.

Services developed out of the pilot will be available to public and private business customers in Denmark.

Urban smart city services

[quote] The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2016 and uses Paradox Engineering’s PE.AMI, an open standard based solution to be able to manage public services and security more intelligently – such as energy distribution, wi-fi, and broadband connectivity, street lighting, public parking, video surveillance and emergency services.

The pilot will make use of 50 light poles which will be equipped with smart lamps and PE.AMI lighting management nodes. These nodes will connect each light point to a wireless network, therefore enabling remote monitoring and control via the PE.AMI central management suite (CMS).

Through the solution, EnergiMidt will be able to remotely manage the entire smart city network, switching single or grouped lamps on or off and varying light intensity whenever needed, as well as monitoring lamp performance.

In the smart lighting network, each pole features a motion sensor that triggers PE.AMI nodes to automatically dim the light up and down during vehicle transit.

ITS International adds that the architecture used to establish the lighting network, will also support the smart parking system. The smart parking pilot will test the open standard based solution PE.AMI to dtect vehicle whether a vehicle is occupying a parking bay or if it is vacant. It is also purposed to provide motorists with real-time information about parking availability.
