Energy Saving services for utilities launched

Cambridge, U.K. — (METERING.COM) — February 10, 2009 – Smart home pioneer has launched Energy Saving services for utilities on its ZigBee-enabled home management platform.

Energy Saving is the second application developed by AlertMe on its online home platform, and adds three new home accessories to the six already available on the platform – the Smart Plug, a wireless heating controller, and meter reading.

The Smart Plug is a plug-through controller which controls and automates any mains appliance it is connected to and precisely measures the power consumed. The wireless heating controller optimizes heating based on the inside and outside temperatures and the status of household occupancy. Meter reading measures whole household consumption and breaks this information down into meaningful information.

AlertMe aims to deliver a complete online service which not only provides excellent visibility of energy consumption, but also offers automatic control of it. Through this approach, the service has the potential to reduce the average annual energy bill by up to 25 percent with its combination of accessories that automate the activation of mains appliances and manage heating whilst encouraging behavioral change.

Once the AlertMe CPE (gateway and accessories) is self-installed in the home, it provides a platform on which the utility provider can deliver multiple layered services to their customers.

“The need to create greater energy efficiency in the home is intensifying at a rapid pace. With the average cost of energy now exceeding 10 percent of disposable income, consumers are looking for measures that can help them to reduce their bills,” commented Pilgrim Beart, director of “Our initial goal is to help utilities to help their customers bring change into effect and reap the benefits inherent in creating savings.”
