Finnish utility extends remote metering

Seinäjoen Energia Oy of Finland has acquired Enermet’s system solution for managing energy consumption data, replacing its previous system which covered approximately 500 of the utility’s largest consumers, out of a total customer base of about 20,000. The new system will include 3000 small customers, mostly in areas where blocks of flats create a need for more regular reads. Old metering devices will be replaced at the same time.

Remote reading will allow bills to be based on a precise real-time meter reading. It also assists energy companies to collect more precise data on the energy consumption of customers located in another company’s area. There is the possibility that Finland will follow Sweden in requiring regular monthly reads for all customers, and if this happens the utility anticipates that remote reading will be even more cost-effective in future. /
