First replaceable battery vehicle unveiled

Copenhagen, Denmark — (METERING.COM) — March 8, 2011 – The first replaceable battery vehicle promising “unlimited mileage”, the Fluence Z.E. Prime Time, has been unveiled by Renault.

A mid-size electric powered vehicle, its lithium-ion battery is understood to offer a range of 185 kilometers. However, with the swappable battery, which can be changed out in less time than it takes to fuel a regular vehicle, the vehicle theoretically offers unlimited driving distance.

“Fluence Z.E. becomes the first unlimited range vehicle in Europe,” said Phillip Klein, Renault’s executive vice president for planning and programs, adding that the vehicle should be available for delivery in the fourth quarter of this year.

Renault has partnered on the Fluence Z.E. project with electric vehicle services provider Better Place, which will establish an infrastructure network in Denmark including 19 car battery switching stations across the country by early 2012. Better Place also is partnering with DONG Energy to leverage Denmark’s 20 percent energy production from wind turbines to power the Better Place network to charge the Fluence Z.E.

Consumers will pay a fixed, monthly rate to charge their batteries, depending on their mileage needs.
